Newly Wed Wife, Summer French- Female, early to mid 20’s, works as a secretary, dresses in a white blouse and khaki pants.
Newly Wed Husband, Jeremy French- Male, early to mid 20’s, works as a customer consultant, dresses in a “suit and tie”.
Elderly Wife, Victoria O’Malley- Female, mid to late 50’s, works as a housewife, dresses in a white and pink polka dotted one piece dress.
Elderly Husband, Connor O’Malley- Male, mid to late 50’s, works as a postal worker, Vietnam Vet, dresses in a wife beater and khaki shorts.

Setting: In the early 1990’s, in Grand Prairie, Kansas. The Frenchs have moved into their apartment a few weeks ago, shortly after their honeymoon. The O’Malleys has lived next door for a decade, since their children left home. The O’Malley’s constant fight and argue with each other over anything.

Scene 1: (In the newly weds’ apartment. A few pictures of the two are around the living room, which is connected to the kitchen. A sofa is against the wall in the living room, a small table is at the entrance of the kitchen with a phone on top. Summer is setting her purse down on the counter when Jeremy enters the apartment, loosening his tie)

Jeremy: Hey, I’m home.
Summer: (Turns to greet him) Hey, I beat you.
Jeremy: (Smiles) So you did. (John walks to her and hugs her) Been waiting long?
Summer: (Shakes her head) I barely beat you. Mr. Marshall had to leave early so he wouldn’t miss his flight.
Jeremy: (Nods his head and leans against the counter) Where’s he flying to?
Summer: He’s going to Las Vegas for the weekend.
Jeremy: (Shakes his head in disgust) Some people just have all the luck, not having to work and just spending money at casinos.
Summer: (Lightly pokes his side) You never cared for gambling before…
Jeremy: I don’t, just the thought of taking the entire weekend off away sounds great.
Summer: (Nods) Yeah, especially when we won’t have to hear the O’Malley’s arguing for hours on end.
Jeremy: (Smiles) That would be great. Few things are worse then having to hear those two in the dead of night.
Summer: (Lightly laughs) Well, it won’t be too long before he gets home and the fighting will begin.
Jeremy: (Sighs loudly) Maybe it’d be better if they were the ones to just leave on a vacation.
(The two enter the kitchen and start to look around for what to make for dinner. Offstage, the O’Malley’s start yelling at each other. Jeremy and Summer stop and look at each other as the O’Malley’s fight)
Victoria: Why do you always have to look like such a mess when you get home?
Connor: I’ve paid for everything, so it’s my place and I’ll do as I please.
Victoria: I’m the one that has to put up with you. If it wasn’t for me, this place would look like a pig sty!
Connor: Well maybe you should leave it alone and let it become one. At least I’ll know where everything would be for a change.
Victoria: Stay away from the fridge, you don’t need a beer.
Connor: To hell with you woman, listening to you makes me need one.
Victoria: Put the beer down!
Connor: Shut up you old bat! It’s my goddamn right as an Irishman.
Victoria: You haven’t even lived in Ireland, so how can you be an Irishman.
Connor: My great great grandfather did.
Victoria: He did, not you. So put the beer down.
Connor: Shut your prissy little British mouth up all ready. For Christ’s sake, I swear, you came out of your mother screaming and haven’t shut up since.

(The scene continues, the characters’ voices crossing over each other)
Jeremy: (Sits down in a chair) Maybe we should move.
Victoria: I haven’t screamed yet, but I will before we’re done!
Summer: (Pulls out a carton of quick make food) Want to make this?
Connor: Go ahead then, I’ll get my earplugs.
Jeremy: (Shrugs) I guess so.
Victoria: Don’t you dare turn your back on me!
Summer: (Sets the box down and looks at Jeremy) Aside from those two, it’s not that bad a place.
Connor: I’ll do as I please dammit.
Jeremy: Well, I meant the apartment.
Victoria: You’ll listen to me, right here and now!
Summer: Oh, I thought you meant out of town.
Connor: Screw you, I’m leaving.
(A gunshot is heard, Jeremy and Summer jump in surprise and looks to stage right, where the O’Malley’s apartment is. Pause)
Jeremy: Was, that just a gunshot?
Summer: I believe so..
Jeremy: (Stands up and heads to the door) I’m going to go find out what happened.
Summer: (Gets between him and the door) Wait, are you sure that’s a good idea?
Jeremy: Well, I don’t want to wonder. Besides, someone’s probably hurt.
Summer: Yeah, probably Mr. O’Malley.
(A knock on the door. Jeremy and Summer look at each other)
Summer: Should we answer? (The door is knocked again)
Jeremy: I think we’d better. (The two go to the door. Jeremy opens it and Victoria enters the apartment)
Victoria: (Goes to sit on the sofa) Oh, I’m sorry for troubling you two. I, well, could you call the police for me please?
Jeremy: (Nods) Okay, I’ll do it. (Goes to the table and dials)
Summer: (Sits next to Victoria) What happened? Me and Jeremy have gotten used to not paying attention to what you guys say.
Victoria: I just got so tired of him and his attitude. He was such a worthless bum. When we were younger, he’d make eyes at any woman passing by and flirt with them. (Holds her head in her hands) I know he was unfaithful and abusive. He kept talking about just leaving me one day and finding someone younger. I just… I didn’t want him to leave. Our children left, I don’t have a job and haven’t had one since after we married. There’s really nothing in my life but him, so I just couldn’t let him leave me.
Jeremy: (Hangs up the phone) An officer will be coming over shortly. Do you, need anything?
Victoria: (Shakes her head) Thank you, no. (She stands) I think, I’ll go back to my apartment now.
Summer: Are you sure?
Victoria: (Nods) Yes. I should at least clean up the mess he made. (Goes out the door, not looking back behind her)
Jeremy: (Goes to Summer) I’m sure things will be fine. When she’ll go to trial, they will go easy on her, considering the circumstances.
Summer: (Nods) I hope so… (A gunshot is heard. Jeremy and Summer look at each other. Lights fade out)
