The Fox and The Giant

Long ago, around what is now California, there lived a giant that moved around the desert looking for creatures or people to eat. One day, he ran across a fox and chased it until he cornered the creature.

“Wait!” The giant stops and looks at the fox in amazement. “You talk?” The fox looks indignantly at the giant. “Of course I can talk. I venture to say I can talk better than you.”

The giant reaches for the fox. The fox moves out of the way. “I said wait. If you’ll not eat me I’ll tell you where to find a village full of people. They have a great deal more meat on them than I do and I’m sure you’ll find them tastier.”

The giant stops and looks at the fox. “Show, now.” The fox bows to the ground and leads the giant to where the village is. Along the way, they pause at a large fault in the ground. The giant backs away, afraid.

“What are you so afraid of? You are big and massive. Such a small hole in the ground shouldn’t frighten one as large as you.” The giant moves slowly to the edge and looks down. “It dark.” The fox looks and nods. “Yes, it is. That must be where the night resides while the sun is up. See, that’s the bottom, and you can walk across it and be at the village straight ahead in no time.”

The giant hesitates then jumps into the fault, falling down, down, down. The fox watches until the giant disappears from sight. The ground quakes as the giant hits the bottom and the fault widens ever so slightly.

The fox smirks and walks away, proud of himself. The giant awakes every few decades or so and try to climb out, only to fall back into the fault. This is why there are earthquakes in California.
